Unit - 1 The selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde
1. The selfish giant is a bedtime story written by Oscar Wilde.
2. A giant had a big and beautiful garden.
3. The children used to play in his garden after the school was over.
4.  He built a high wall around his garden and put up a notice board.
5. He was a selfish giant.
6. The spring did not come to giant's garden.
7. One day children crept through a hole in the wall and Spring came with them.
8. The giant realised his mistake.
9. The giant broke down the wall
10. A little boy kissed him.
11. Years rolled by and he became old.
12. He longed to see the little boy who kissed him.
13. The little boy was none other than Jesus Christ.
14. He took the giant to his garden which is Paradise.
Moral: selflessness is next to Godliness.

Unit - 2 The Lottery Ticket by Anton Checkov
1. This story depicts the reaction of a couple when they win a lottery ticket.
2. Ivan and Masha were young, middle class couple.
3. Ivan had an income of 1200 roubles a year.
4. One day his wife Masha asked him to see the result of the lottery ticket.
5. On seeing the series 9499 he started daydreaming.
6. He thought of buying an estate, going abroad, enjoying the weather etc.
7.He wanted to go abroad with a young lady.
8. He began to hate Masha and her relations.
9. Masha too started dreaming.
10. She thought that Ivan would grab her money.
11. Both hated each other.
12. At last Ivan announced that the winning number was 46 not 26.
13. Both hatred and hope disappeared at once.
Moral: Dreaming beyond reality always brings disappointment.

Unit - 3 Last Leaf by O Henry
1. Sue and Johnsy were painters and friends
2. They had their studio at the top of a three storeyed building.
3. In November, Johnsy was attacked by pneumonia.
4.The doctor advised her to have the desire to live.
5. Johnsy was looking at the falling of the leaves in an ivy vine.
5.She made up her mind that She would die when the last leaf fell.
6. Sue informed Behrman about Johnsy's imagination.
7. That night the last leaf fell down.
8. Behrman drew the last leaf and died.
9. On seeing the last leaf Johnsy became hopeful and alright.
10. Thus, Behrman's masterpiece, the last leaf saved the life of Johnsy.

Unit - 4 Two Friends by Guy De Maupassant
1. During world war II Paris was besieged by Prussians.
2. Morissot and Sauvage were fishing companions.
3. Before the war broke out, they used to go to Ile Marante for fishing.
4. They met face to face after a long time.
5. Both drank absinthe together and decided to go to Ile Marante for fishing.
6. They got the password from Colonel.Dumoulin.
7. They were fishing happily.
8. Suddenly, they were arrested by the prussians.
9. The German officer demanded the password.
10. Both did not reveal the password and were shot dead.
Thus, they sacrificed their life for the country.
